Farmingdale State College is taking extra steps to make sure you are who you say you are when you sign in.  This extra security verification is also known as multi-factor authentication (MFA).  It consists of a combination of your username, password, and a mobile device or phone.

MFA is more secure than just a password because it relies on two forms of authentication:

  • Something you know, like your password.
  • Something you have, like a phone or other device that you carry.

Multi factor authentication can help stop malicious hackers from pretending to be you.  Even if they have your password, the odds are that they don't have your device, too.  If you are not actively logging in, do not approve a login request and report it to the IT Helpdesk for investigation. Also, IT Helpdesk or other staff will never ask you for these codes to approve a login request for them. Never provide these codes to anyone other than your normal login process.

The steps below will guide you through the text option.  The other options you can choose from are:

  • Text/Call Phone (6 digit code)
  • Mobile App Push (Approve/Deny)
  • Code from Mobile App (6 digit code)
  • Text/Call Alternate Phone (6 digit code)

If you choose to use the Mobile App option, use the Microsoft Authenticator with Microsoft 365 External link.  The Microsoft authenticator smart phone app is just one click instead of typing in a 6-digit code.

To enroll, go to www.farmingdale.edu/mfaenroll or follow the prompts when logging into your account.

MFA Verification Successful

Now when logging in, you will receive the below when the following conditions are met.

  • Never logged in from the device before
  • It has been 14 days since prompted for MFA

You will be prompted for different services (such as Office, Teams, OneDrive, Suny.edu, etc) at different intervals because they are separate applications.  Depending on the initial login to those services and the timeout, this can happen around the same time or spread out.  It may appear that you are prompted multiple times or less than 14 days, but it will save it for 14 days for each service.
